Supporting aspiration

The Wellington Paraplegic & Physically Disabled Trust empowers people with physical disabilities to grow, achieve, and thrive.

About the trust

Since 1973 the Wellington Paraplegic & Physically Disabled Trust has made finance available to the physically disabled community in New Zealand with targeted grants supporting aspiration.

These grants help people push forward in life-changing ways, giving meaningful assistance to those seeking to challenge themselves, extend their abilities, and achieve personal goals.

Our objectives

The objectives of the Trust are to make provision for the welfare and rehabilitation of physically disabled persons, with a focus on supporting their re-establishment and integration into the life and work of the community. This includes providing for their mental and physical needs, as well as the development and maintenance of buildings, equipment, and facilities to support these aims. The Trust also supports research relating to physical disability, and the training of individuals to carry out any of the above purposes.

Our grants

We currently offer three types of grants, each intended to support individuals seeking growth, challenge, and fulfilment.

The Len Southward Adventure Award

Assists with participation in physical, creative, or personal challenge - whether through travel, outdoor pursuits, or once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
The goal is to build confidence, resilience, and experience through adventure.

The Ian Campbell Scholarship

Supports individuals undertaking tertiary or vocational education.
This grant is designed to reduce barriers to learning and help recipients gain qualifications, skills, and independence.

The Ray Heath/Edith Gooley Leadership Fund

Designed for those pursuing leadership development or roles within their community, workplace, or sector.
Supports initiatives that grow influence, voice, and visibility for people with physical disabilities.

Real impact

“The financial assistance from the Trust continues to make a meaningful difference in my journey to becoming a registered nurse. I am in my third year of the Bachelor of Nursing programme and this year has been academically enriching, and grown my confidence and skills.”

“This grant is helping Unity make her para-cycling dreams come true. She is deeply grateful for the opportunity to keep challenging herself through the sport.”
